A catastrophic flash flood swept through Nepal's Chamoli district in February 2021, killing at least 200 people and leaving dozens missing. Scientists now point to a collapsing glacier as the probable trigger for this devastating natural disaster.
The Nanda Devi glacier, located in Uttarakhand state near the Nepal border, appears to have partially collapsed and released massive volumes of water and ice into the Rishiganga River. This surge traveled downstream with enormous force, destroying everything in its path. The flood moved so quickly that residents had virtually no warning to evacuate.
